When To Set Limits For Toddlers

Respect is at the heart of the RIE philosophy, but it can be confusing sometimes when we are trying to straddle the divide between a toddler's developing autonomy and the need to set limits.

Janet Lansbury so clearly articulates this when she says;

"Children need lots of opportunities to be autonomous and have their choices respected. At the same time, they need to know they're not in charge, and we demonstrate that through our confident, decisive, gentle leadership."
There are many many opportunities where we can allow toddlers to have reasonable choices during the day.

But here are FIVE important moments when toddlers need us to gently but firmly overrule their choices and follow through...
